Civil Rights

Now, more than ever, we must stand up for the civil rights of the members of our community. Although New York City has often been at the forefront of civil rights reform and achieving equality for non-majority communities, there is still so much more we can do.

Jorge strongly believes that hate crime in NYC is a pressing issue that needs to be handled in the most serious manner. Not only does it alter, and sometimes end, individual lives, but it creates a deep rooted fear that can oppress entire communities within the city. We have a responsibility to hold people accountable for their actions by meeting any acts of bias or discrimination with the full force of the law.

One of the the things that makes our community such an amazing place is its diversity. Jorge will advocate for more inclucisivity throughout the area by providing residents with better language access so that everyone can make use of essential resources without being excluded through language barriers.

Protecting the LGBTQIA+ community is another important concern for Jorge. Currently, there is no statewide law that explicitly prohibits discrimination against transgender and gender non-conforming people. This is why Jorge strongly supports the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) in expanding legal protections provided through New York State’s anti-discrimination laws to all members of our community.

Jorge will work vigilantly to ensure that every single person in the community is allowed great and equal opportunities.

Common and political rights are a class of rights that shield people’s opportunity from encroachment by governments, social associations, and private people. They guarantee one’s capacity to take an interest in the common and political existence of the general public and state without separation or suppression.
